Car c&rsquo;est \u00e0 la fois un microcosme et un haut lieu du d\u00e9veloppement de la gravure europ\u00e9enne. En 1927, Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988) fonde un atelier de gravure rue Moulin Vert \u00e0 Paris. Au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1930, l&rsquo;atelier est transf\u00e9r\u00e9 au 17 rue Campagne premi\u00e8re \u00e0 Paris, d&rsquo;o\u00f9 il tire le nom d&rsquo;Atelier 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hayter pr\u00e9conise l&rsquo;utilisation de la taille-douce (la gravure sur m\u00e9tal) comme moyen d&rsquo;expression direct, plut\u00f4t que comme moyen de reproduction.\u00a0Deux tendances se confirmeront au cours de l&rsquo;histoire. La premi\u00e8re consiste \u00e0 utiliser le burin directement, sans dessin pr\u00e9paratoire, pour inscrire des lignes sur la plaque de m\u00e9tal. Une sorte de ligne effr\u00e9n\u00e9e qui solidifie la passion artistique. La seconde tendance consiste \u00e0 utiliser les profondeurs de la plaque m\u00e9tallique travaill\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;eau-forte, en y appliquant des rouleaux de duret\u00e9 diff\u00e9rentes. L&rsquo;encrage consistant \u00e0 jouer avec diff\u00e9rentes viscosit\u00e9s de l&rsquo;encre. Cela brise compl\u00e8tement la limite conceptuelle de la plaque en taille-douce et pr\u00e9sente un effet artistique extr\u00eamement color\u00e9. La cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 de ce langage a apport\u00e9 une grande vitalit\u00e9, extr\u00eamement innovante, dans l&rsquo;art de la gravure. Picasso, Max Ernst, Mir\u00f3, Giacometti, Calder, Arp, Tanguy, et beaucoup d&rsquo;autres encore ont \u00e9tudi\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019Atelier 17 la technique d&rsquo;impression en couleur simultan\u00e9e<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En 1939, du fait de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l&rsquo;atelier a d\u00e9m\u00e9nag\u00e9 \u00e0 New York. Nombres d&rsquo;artistes ont fr\u00e9quent\u00e9 l&rsquo;atelier durant sa pr\u00e9riode new yorkaise : Marc Chagall, Andr\u00e9 Masson, Mark Rothko, Willem De Kooning, Robert Mothwell, Jackson Pollock, Salvador Dal\u00ed, et beaucoup d&rsquo;autres. En 1950, Hayter revient \u00e0 Paris pour y r\u00e9installer l&rsquo;Atelier 17 : d&rsquo;abord au 278 rue de Vaugirard, puis au 10 rue Didot. D\u00e9sormais, Shu Lin Chen dirige l\u2019atelier.
